Second Fall Farmer's Market! Due to rain it was held in the Great Hall which ended up being fairly successful. Also at the event was Food for All where all food related student groups came to share information and provide a solid front to the food cause on campus

Second Sustainability Meal of the Fall- Clean Your Plate, where we discussed food waste by having students guess the weight of their plate and then weighing their plate. Those had the closest weights got a great water bottle. We had lots of great discussions and were able to partner with CCCG to discuss composting!

FLO held it's first Farmer's Market of Fall 2014 in the Pit which was wildly successful! Lots of great produce, much more than we have ever had before!

The first Sustainability Meal of the school year was Taste of the Region, where delicious food that was local to Chapel Hill and discussed the difference between local and native.

Kicking off the year, we hosted our first Food 101! We invited multiple speakers to discuss various aspects of the the food system all for 7 minutes each while guests enjoyed a fully catered meal by Local 1.5.0. The event was very well attended with over 100 guests!

Our lovely RFC interns presented this semesters findings to members of CDS and RHA with a lot of support and joy. With CDS' Real Food percentage up to 26% we are all seeing a lot of progress in the work being done! To read more click on Real Food Calculator link.

FLO biannual Farmer's Market held in the Pit! Everything from flowers to honey to bread to soup was there! And nobody forgot to get their pic with the pig. To say it was successful beyond our hopes is an understatement.

FLO members drove down to our sister state, South Carolina, for a Real Food Challenge conference and had a blast. From eating local, to networking, to bonding, to learning leadership skills, the conference was a big success! The members came back energized and excited to move FLO forward.

FLO will host Food Week in celebration of all things food!
MONDAY - "Waste Day" - Come find us in the pit from 10am-2pm, learn some stats about compost and waste handling in on-campus dining halls and take our "Leftovers" Challenge! Prizes and yummy goodies will be awarded!
TUESDAY / WEDNESDAY - We'll be in the pit again (10am-2pm), and you will have the chance to wrestle a FLO member dressed in costume as a Vegetable or Animal! In the evenings, we are holding two film screenings:
- American Meat (Tues, at 6:30 in Union 3203), with special guest Jennifer Curtis of Firsthand Foods
- Vegucated (Weds, at 6:30 in Union 3203), with special guest Dilip Barman of the Triangle Vegetarian Society
THURSDAY - FLO is hosting the Farmers' Market - 10am-2pm in the Breezeway between the Union and the Union Annex. Come check out some local products and free samples! There is also a Green Themed Meal at Rams Head Dining Hall (all day long).
FRIDAY - FLO will host a Micro-gardening Workshop in the Coker Arboretum. Time to be determined.

FLO hosted "A Conversation on Equality in the Food System," featuring Tom Philpott, Vimala Rajendran, and a third guest speaker. The event started at 5:30pm at Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe. Check out the Daily Tar Heel's take on the event here.

FLO hosted an event focused on food-choice and food marketing. Starting at 7:30pm there will be a screening of Food Mythbusters latest film, followed by a discussion at 8pm with a few community members with expertise in food choice. The event will take place at 149 E. Franklin St (on the second floor, just above the Princeton Review shop), which is home to Roote, a local business that is partnering with FLO for this event.

FLO hosted representatives from the Coalition of Immokolee Workers during their southeastern Publix Truth Tour. Learn more about their mission, as well as their campaign to convince Wendy's to join the Fair Food Program. [Gardner 105 at 7pm!]

FLO's first meeting of the fall semester went really well. Thanks to all that came out to see what we're about!

FLO dressed to impress newcomers to campus at Fall Fest this year. We attracted crowds with our costumes, handed out coupons to the Carrboro Farmer's Market and had over 200 people sign up for our listserv. We can't wait to see more from these enthusiastic fresh brains on campus! Interest Meeting will be soon - stay tuned for the time/date/place soon!

FLO members traveled up to BALTIMORE this weekend to the Breaking Ground Conference at Johns Hopkins University. The summit is organized by the Real Food Challenge, a national organization that campaigns for the procurement of real food on college and university campuses, with the national goal of 20% real food by 2020. The FLO/CDS Farmers' Market is coming up! Join us on the main quad (Polk Place) from 10am-2pm on April 19th. Both past and new vendors will be present to sell all sorts of delicious food: produce and meats, goat cheese, honey, preserves, chocolates, baked goods, breads, free 1.5.0. samples and homemade ice cream sandwiches are just a few of the great items you'll find at the market!

2/7/2012 Come eat with us! FLO is putting on a community potluck picnic on the steps of south building to imbibe in delicious and delectable treats, listen to beautiful live music, and rally public support for the Real Food Challenge Campus Commitment. We need to show the chancellor that we care about the food in our dining halls--where it's coming from, how it's getting here, the whole nine yards!
So come on out to enjoy some delicious food (bring a dish to share if you can!), and also listen to some local farmers and community members share just how important a sense of community and food is to them. We want the Chancellor to come down and share this meal with us, so we need a strong showing!

October 24th is National Food Day; FLO members have been busy preparing for our celebration of National Food Day, and it looks like the week will be a huge success! We will be hosting four film screenings throughout the week and the Farmers' Market will be bigger than ever. Check out our blog and our Facebook page and join us in celebrating with a week of food-fun events! Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way.

The date for FLO's Fall Farmers' Market is set! The market will be held at Polk Place (the main quad) from 10am-2pm on Thursday, October 27th, during Food Week. A few of the confirmed vendors are: PlowGirl Farm (produce), Prodigal Farm (goat cheese and cheesecakes), Blessed Earth Farm (pickles and preserves), Fitita's Kitchen (chocolates and truffles) and more! Come out to the market to get to know some amazing local food pioneers, enjoy the flavors of fall, and start the season off right with delicious FLO Food!

Preparations for Food Week are underway. Plans for a documentary series with speaker panels beginning on October 24th, National Food Day and hopefully a few FLO standards (i.e. Farmers' Market on the quad) too! Dreams of Farm field trips are dancing through our heads as well...perhaps a visit to Cane Creek is in our future.

FLO meetings have resumed at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the bottom floor of Murphey Hall.
This years projects are Carolina Dining Services/Campaigns, Campus Events, PR/Media, Education.
The four tenants of the year are VISIBILITY, ACCOUNTABILITY, ACCESSIBILITY, and EDUCATION. Everything we do will be based on addressing these as goals and guidelines of our work. If interested in joining the listserv, please email [email protected].
